The 2009/2010Transition Year Students at Moyne Community School have come up with an innovative way of helping voluntary organisations and groups all over Ireland make up some of the funding shortfall caused by the economic downturn. Under the guidance of their Enterprise Teacher Mr. Padraig Doherty they have put together a database of over 2500 general knowledge quiz questions. The students have identified a market for table quiz questions among groups who have suffered a drop of between 20 and 80 percent in their funding.
Market research indicated that a lot of organisations would like to hold a table quiz but have great difficulty getting someone to set the questions given the time and effort involved. It has taken the students three months to assemble the database. The questions have been prepared using a variety of reference sources. All questions are graded easy, medium and difficult and are designed to be interesting, entertaining and moderately challenging. Topics covered include Sport, History, Geography, Literature, Music, Films & TV, Anagrams etc.
The students plan to sell these questions in sets of 100 plus tiebreakers to organisations all over Ireland. Questions are generated at random by the database so no two quizzes will ever be the same. The price is €30 and all proceeds are being donated to the “Love Laura Fund”. Rachel Gilna, Managing Director, points out that this is less than the cost of one table at most quizzes and all the rest is profit! As part of their commitment to quality and customer service there is a full money back guarantee if you are not satisfied with the questions.
“Wise Guys” was launched with a monster table quiz in the Breffni Arms Hotel, Arva on Thursday 28th January . Quizmaster on the night was former principal of Moyne Community School Mr. Liam Faughnan. All proceeds from the quiz were in aid of the “Love Laura Fund” .
