U-14 ‘A’ Glory For Moyne
Ladies Football in Moyne C.S. came to prominence again after winning the ‘Pat the Baker’ U-14 ‘A’ Leinster title on Wednesday last. This was a thrilling final played in Bunbrosna GAA grounds, Co. Westmeath against St. Mary’s Edenderry. Moyne were four points ahead in injury time but had to endure a nerve- wrecking finale. However, they held out and great scenes of celebration ensued.
Perfect conditions prevailed at the Bunbrosna grounds for the ‘Pat the Baker’ sponsored Post Primary schools decider. It was the Offaly school who opened the brighter of the two teams registering the primary point in front of a large travelling support. However, Moyne quickly asserted their superiority and went on to lead by 2-3 to 0-3 at the break. Indeed Moyne’s first score was a brilliantly executed goal scored by half forward, Laura Burke. A quick ball was pumped into the full forward line where the highly skilful, Rebecca Maguire, manoeuvred past her opponent. She gave a precision pass across the goalmouth to meet the perfectly timed, oncoming half forward who volleyed the ball into the net. Moyne’s forward line of Eimear Heaney, Shannon Bransfield, Donna Masterson and Laura Burke worked hard on attacks, forcing the defence to foul and winning frees. Laura Burke converted two close range frees while Eimear Heaney slotted over a well worked point. The score of the game came mid-way into the first half when a long ball sent into the full forward line deceived Edenderry’s full back. Rebecca Maguire was the quickest to react, dribbling the ball infront of her and slotting the ball in the corner if the net. St. Mary’s continued to battle back and fired over the next two points in quick succession, leaving them trailing by six points at half time.
The second half proved a much tougher contest as St. Mary’s showed great tenacity and determination. Moyne’s defence line were put under pressure with St. Mary’s forwards making attacking runs and linking up with their midfield duo. Their swift and accurate passing movement helped to create frees and space for their forwards to score. Corner forwards Megan Moore and Shauna Ward scored a point each from awarded frees while full forward, Sarah Lawton slotted over a point following a well blocked shot. Disaster struck for Moyne minutes later when centre forward, Ruth Bergin, ran onto a pass and found space to bury the ball into the net.
The pressure was now extreme but on a remarkable display of defiance, Moyne’s defence of Catriona Farrelly, Maeve O’Reilly and Cailin Sheridan chased, blocked and harried their opponents. Great clearances made by half back Ciara Keogh and centre back Ellie Columb, linking up with midfielders Michelle Masterson and Aedin Mimnagh, helped to deliver good quality ball into the forward line. Emma Farley and Eimear Heaney raced onto these clearances before chasing towards goal with their blistering sols attacks. As a result, St. Mary’s defence were forced to concede frees which Emma Farley converted, notching up three points to her credit. The same player was again pivotal in netting Moyne’s final goal in the final quarter. A well kicked long range shot looked destined for a point finish when it fell short to hit the cross bar and glide into the top of the net.
The North Longford school were now four points in the lead into injury time. They continued to work tirelessly, showing the great character of the team. St. Mary’s had no choice now but to risk everything by moving forward as the game entered its final minutes. The ‘never say die’ attitude of players such as Emma Bleakley, Ailish Noonan, Aedin Mimnagh and Michelle Masterson came to the fore as they helped stop St. Mary’s players moving forward and intercepting passes. Despite this, The Offaly school managed to win a 30m free which was quickly taken and blasted towards the Moyne net. Goalkeeper, Laura Bleakley, was superb in blocking it only the referee to allow St. Mary’s to retake it again. However, the Moyne goalie was in defiant mood and blocked the shot for a second time. The tension peaked further when the referee awarded another close range free on the 30m line which was again saved by the tenacious heroic work of the entire defence line. The referee blew the whistle and Moyne held on to secure the U-14 ‘A’ title. The prestigious cup was awarded to captain, Michelle Masterson, who gave a fine speech and the jubilant supporters returned home in glory.
